THE Selangor government is poised to expand its Higher Education Institution Study Grant (HPIPT) scheme next year, with plans to increase the number of recipients from the current 3,000 to 5,000 in response to sustained demand from students pursuing tertiary education.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state administration was reviewing its financial capacity to reinstate the previous allocation of 5,000 recipients after more than 5,000 applications were received in both 2025 and 2026.
“Our findings over the past two years show that more than 5,000 students have applied for university admission each year.
“As such, the state government is assessing whether Selangor's financial position would allow us to increase the number of recipients, possibly to between 5,000 and 6,000.
“We previously provided assistance to 5,000 recipients, and God willing, we hope to restore that number under the Selangor Budget 2027,” he said during the question-and-answer session at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly today.
Beyond increasing the recipient quota, Amirudin said the state government was reviewing the HPIPT application timeline to ensure students had sufficient time to apply after receiving confirmation of admission to higher education institutions.
He said feedback from applicants indicated that the existing application window was too short, causing some eligible students to miss out on the assistance.
“We will look into this so that the application period can be aligned with university admissions and the required verification process,” he said.
The state government is also considering opening applications twice a year to cater for students enrolling during different university intake periods, giving more eligible applicants the opportunity to benefit from the scheme.
HPIPT provides a one-off RM1,000 grant to Selangor students pursuing Level 4 Skills Certificate, diploma and bachelor's degree programmes at recognised public and private higher education institutions. - August 6, 2026
