KUALA LUMPUR – Putrajaya will maintain the introduction to Jawi script in national schools and vernacular schools.

In a parliamentary written reply to Alice Lau (Lanang-PH) yesterday, the Education Ministry said it will maintain the six pages of Jawi script introduction for national schools and three pages for vernacular schools in the Bahasa Melayu textbooks.

“The introduction to Jawi for Year Six students will continue as decided by the cabinet on August 14, 2019.

“The Education Ministry will maintain six pages in the Bahasa Melayu textbook for national schools and three pages in the Bahasa Melayu textbook for vernacular schools.

“The choice of words in the Jawi script for vernacular schools involve phrases used in daily life such as selamat datang (welcome), bahasa jiwa bangsa (language is the soul of a people) and Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia (National Library),” said the statement.

Lau had asked whether the government will continue Jawi script lessons and if it has any plans on improving the syllabus. – The Vibes, November 3, 2021
