GEORGE TOWN – A former St Xavier’s Institution (SXI) student is contributing to his alma mater by bringing in Motorola Solutions Inc to advocate for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Solomon Lorthu, in his capacity as managing director and vice-president of Motorola Solution’s Penang operations, organised a talk on the importance of STEM and Penang’s electrical and electronics industry.

He was also in SXI’s class of 1986/1988.

Motorola Solutions also donated RM25,000 to SXI’s fun run on September 16, organised to mark the school’s 170th anniversary celebrations here.

Also present were school board chairman Victor Tan, board member Jeffery Chew, principal Goh Hong Peng and Motorola Solutions senior vice-president (global enterprise and channels) John Zidar as well as Katja Millard, the company’s vice-president (PCR products and engineering) with its deputy managing director John Andersen.

Also in attendance was SXI’s brother-director Jason Blackie and the school’s heritage board chairman Ooi Gim Ewe.

Among the highlights of the anniversary celebrations will be the unveiling of the school’s heritage gallery and a dinner, as well as the opening of a time capsule in December.

Motorola too has some roots in Penang as it was one of the first foreign direct investors into the state.

Since 1974, it has been a permanent fixture at the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone.

The company has grown and evolved into Motorola Solutions, whose expertise is in walkie-talkie and tech components. – The Vibes, June 30, 2022
