KUALA LUMPUR – Some 156 undocumented migrants were detained after authorities raided an illegal settlement in Cyberjaya last night.
Checks during the 11pm operation also found the settlement lacked proper drainage and sewage systems, while electricity and water supply were connected illegally.
Immigration Director-General Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud said of the total 202 migrants inspected, only 46 had work permits, and those detained will be taken to a screening centre at the Semenyih Immigration depot.
He said the 156 detained comprised Bangladeshis (62), Indonesians (42), Myanmar (29), Nepalis (20), and one Pakistani and one Indian national.
In a statement, he added that the illegal settlement was hidden from plain view as it had a surrounding fence and is adjacent to a construction site.
The operation was conducted by officers from the Immigration Department, police, National Registration Department, Labour Department and Civil Defence Force.
