KUALA LUMPUR – April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day, an internationally recognised day promoted by the United Nations to strengthen acceptance, understanding and inclusion of people with the disability.
The Vibes pays tribute to the therapists and educators who work to help children with autism overcome their challenges with a particular focus on AE Autism Home HQ, a special education centre in Bangi, Selangor. Permission from the centre and parents has been granted for use of the children's photos.
The centre, in operation since 2019, has five branches in different states. It also offers therapy in the children’s homes.
At the centre, children are placed in groups according to their level of autism, instead of age. They are exposed to not just the basics of academic syllabi but are also taught to practice motor and social skills that will help them be more independent in the future.
AE Autism Home HQ provides full-day service until 5.30pm especially for parents who work.
It is a long journey for the children and their educators but gradually, with consistency, acceptance and inclusion from the community, there is no reason why those with autism cannot become valued members of society. – The Vibes, April 2, 2023
