KUALA LUMPUR – Tens of thousands of Malaysians of various races and cultures today flooded cities across the country to celebrate the Keretapi Sarong programme.
At Dataran Merdeka here alone, more than 10,000 Malaysians on average wore pelikat, batik sarung and other traditional ethnic clothing to celebrate the nation’s diversity.
The Keretapi Sarong event this year was organised by Locco, an organisation that helps promote the cultural activity since 2017.
Keretapi Sarong took place simultaneously in four major cities in Malaysia: Johor Baru (along the Segget River), Kota Baru (LaRocka Park, Tunjong Kota Baru, Kelantan), Ipoh (KTMB Ipoh), and Kuala Terengganu (Terengganu Cultural Village).
It was also celebrated abroad in London, United Kingdom, with Battersea Power Station as the final destination.
What is interesting here is that the organisers managed to showcase not only attire from the Malay community but also those from various races’ traditions, including those of the Baba-Nyonya and Ceti descendants and other ethnic groups from all over Malaysia.
