IT took some 16 years but the annual George Town Heritage Celebration has become a major draw for Penang, with a record crowd turning up to experience the diverse cultural and heritage offerings of the Unesco World Heritage Site.
The event was held around the inner city of George Town. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow launched the event before touring the many attractions, starting at Armenian Park. He was joined by Amanah deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusuf Rawa along the way.
A beaming Chow said this year’s celebration was by far the largest in terms of crowd participation.
“The organiser, George Town World Heritage Incorporated, has executed a successful publicity campaign, promoting the celebrations in schools and hotels. This effort has drawn numerous visitors from all walks of life,” Chow said.
Droves of tourists and local residents took advantage of the long Awal Muharram weekend break to visit the historic sites, including the Choo Chay Keong Temple, Yap Kongsi Temple, Mesjid Acheh – reputedly one of the oldest mosques in Penang – Khoo Kongsi Temple, and the restaurants that dot the heritage enclave.
There were colouring contests for the young, photography opportunities, cultural dances, and songs. Among the highlights were boria and Chingay performances and heritage workshops.
July 7 has been a public holiday in Penang since George Town was listing as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2008.
The enclave has a 109ha core and 150ha of buffer zones.
Penang will host the George Town Festival and the Penang Hill Festival later this month. – July 8, 2024.
