A MAJOR road leading to the Balik Pulau district in Penang - Jalan Tun Sardon - is scheduled to be reopened by 8pm tonight after an extensive clean-up by the state public works department (JKR).

Following the spate of landslips on the road due to heavy rainfall last week, the road was ordered close by JKR out of concerns for public safety.

It is now scheduled to be reopened although the road is operating at 70 percent capacity, said state executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari.

Zairil took to social media to provide an update, stating that there would be road barriers set up, so commuters need to navigate carefully in the stretch from Sungai Ara / Paya Terubong onwards to Balik Pulau.

Earlier, Zairil told a media briefing that the uncertainty in weather had hampered the clean-up works.

He added that JKR would also monitor trees and debris on private land, and if they pose a hazard to the road, the landowners would be notified.

If they do not take remedial action, JKR would be forced to act first and bill the owners later, he said. - October 31, 2025.
