THE Ministry of Health (MOH) will investigate and obtain reports from its officers following claims that unregistered and questionable influenza test kits are being sold in the market, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
He stressed that the matter is being taken seriously to ensure no unscrupulous parties exploit public concern over the spread of influenza.
“Members of the public showing symptoms of influenza are advised to seek immediate medical attention and follow the advice of doctors.
“This is crucial to prevent complications and ensure patients receive appropriate treatment, as self-testing or self-medication without professional guidance is not a recommended policy,” he told reporters after officiating the Second National Conference of Thalassaemia Patients and Caregivers in Putrajaya today.
Earlier reports raised concern that the rising number of influenza cases has prompted some sellers to market unverified influenza test kits.
The Medical Device Authority (MDA) has urged consumers to verify the registration status of any test kit before purchase or use to ensure it complies with safety standards.
Dr Dzulkefly further advised that those experiencing severe symptoms, such as shortness of breath or respiratory distress, should not attempt self-treatment or buy medicine without expert advice. “If such symptoms occur, please consult a doctor immediately for further examination,” he said.
He added that influenza testing is only permitted at selected public health clinics and private medical facilities, and not through self-administered tests. - November 1, 2025
