PENANG police will tap the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help discharge policing duties more effectively, especially in areas such as online fraud.
Newly appointed Penang police chief, Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng, said he has instructed police tech specialists to liaise with the corporate sector, who are willing to assist them in adopting new tech.
This includes utilising AI to help the police to combat crime, he said.
"I would like to use this opportunity to invite corporate entities who are keen to share their AI expertise with us, to help us fight crime effectively," said Lim after his maiden briefing for senior officers at the state police officers' mess.
The Muar-born officer also started his tenure with strict instructions to all district police heads to ensure that anyone who wants to lodge police reports can do so immediately without any restrictions.

There should not be any hinderance over dress code, as the complainants are usually in a state of distress or in an emergency, hence that is why they want to lodge a report, said Lim.
"We should not allow the issue of dress code to hinder anyone from lodging a police report," said Lim.
He, however, urged everyone to be clad decently when out in public.
Lee also said that the police will build a closer rapport with the local authorities to check on abandoned premises and buildings to prevent them from becoming drug dens and crime-infested areas.
Lim also said that he would soon disclose the state police's success in fighting narcotics in Penang.
