Lend your voice to the fight for equal rights

IT is without a doubt that feminism as an ideal has taken root in the social consciousness of many people from around the world. 
 
Regardless of what the fourth wave of feminism has become, the whole movement started with the notion that women have the same rights as their male counterparts.
 
Just like we had once fought for the right to vote, we are now fighting for the right to not be defined or objectified solely by our gender.
 
Based on the Global Gender Gap Report by the World Economic Forum, which ranks individual nations on their collective efforts to achieve gender parity, Malaysia’s performance has diminished substantially over the past three years with a global ranking of 63 in 2018 to that of 104 in 2020. 
 
It was revealed that women only made up for 20.4% of the nation’s legislators, senior officials or managers in 2020 and only 55% of women participated in Malaysia’s labour force that same year.
 
The report went on to display a shocking imbalance in political empowerment as well with only 14.4% of Parliament and 18.5% of ministerial positions were inhabited by women.
 
We can research and present as many statistics as possible but there is still a desperate need to solve the issue at hand.
 
As such, The Vibes will be conducting its first Vibeinar on March 5 under The Vibes 360 initiative to promote a discussion on gender inequality in support of International Women’s Day 2021.
 
Titled ‘Challenging Gender Inequality: Are Malaysian Women Truly Empowered?’, The Vibes has sought out a list of esteemed panellists to chair this Zoom-based webinar, including Member of Parliament, YB Nurul Izzah Anwar, actress and entrepreneur, Kavita Sidhu, as well as social rights advocate, Heidy Quah.
