MIRI – Two men have saved an injured wildcat found along a roadside in the Samalaju state constituency in northern Sarawak.
The compassionate duo then drove about an hour to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) office in Bintulu town some 60km away to hand over the animal to wildlife rangers.
"SFC thanked these two kind persons for rescuing the wildcat yesterday.
"We are grateful to them for their care and concern towards animals. The wildcat had been taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment.
"It will be rehabilitated and then released back into the forests," SFC Bintulu office said in its social media postings.
The two men did not want to be identified.
Last month on March 26, a teacher in a remote school in Meradong district in central Sarawak found an injured rare eagle along a highway. He then drove about 100km to deliver the wildlife to Sarawak Forestry Corporation for urgent treatment.
The teacher, Zulkipli Abdul Rani, is from SMK Meradong. He had earned praises from the top brass of SFC for his kindness and concern towards wildlife.
SFC chief executive officer Zolkipli Mohamad Aton said that these kind folks deserve to be praised and emulated by others in Sarawak.
"They are good, noble citizens. Their example of care and concern for animals should be emulated by everyone," Zolkipli said.
He added that members of the public who come across injured wildlife must call SFC immediately.
Those who come across cases of anyone capturing, trapping, having possession of wildlife, abusing, buying and selling of wildlife and killing or hunting of these animals must also report to SFC, he said.
