AN attempt by a man to smuggle out several species of wildlife worth about RM20,000 was successfully foiled by authorities at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here on Sunday.

The Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said that during an operation at about 8.10pm at Terminal 1, it, together with the Wildlife and National Parks Protection Department (Perhilitan) and the KLIA Auxiliary Police, detected suspicious actions by a passenger before inspecting his luggage.

"Further inspection found the animals suspected to be a gibbon and two suspected to be cuscus being attempted to be taken out on a flight to Mumbai, India.

"The total value of the seizure is estimated to reach RM20,000," it said in a statement on Monday.

He said the 46-year-old suspect was later arrested and taken to the Aeropolis Police Station for further investigation.

"The case is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716) and the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008 (Act 686)."

All case items were also handed over to the KLIA Perhilitan for further action," he said.

AKPS said the success of the operation reflected the authorities' continued commitment to combating wildlife smuggling activities as well as ensuring that the country's main entry point is not used as a route for cross-border crime. - September 29, 2025
