THEMED ‘Doing is Everything’, Red Hong Yi has showcased an art installation that exemplifies sustainability. It gives a second life to used items.

In collaboration with Nespresso Malaysia, a total of 24,000 used Nespresso capsules were used as a medium by the contemporary artist, on display at the Nespresso Boutique at The Gardens Mall.

This collaboration aims to highlight the importance of recycling and make it clear that everyone, including coffee enthusiasts, plays an important role in creating a positive impact on the world and the environment.

Entitled ‘Kaleidoscope’, this art installation consists of seven mirrored panels that illustrate the concept of ‘do everything’. Red demonstrated her craft and precision in arranging Nespresso capsules in a certain position to give the illusion of a binocular game.

It conveys the message that secondhand goods deserve a second life by showcasing such beautiful works of art. The art installation measures 1.46m and weighs 70kg, embodying the concept of continuous recycling practice, which should be practised by all.

“I am honoured to be allowed to work with Nespresso. It always encourages us to recycle. It was a unique experience because I was able to give meaning to the second life of these used capsules into a work of art. ”

“I believe everyone plays an important role in bringing change to our planet. Through our daily actions, I am sure we will be one step closer to sustainability,” said Red.

Nespresso Malaysia business executive officer Floriane Novello said, “Sustainability is the backbone of everything we do at Nespresso. We build companies, products and practices on the simple basis that every cup of Nespresso needs to have a positive impact. ”

"In line with the concept of ‘Doing is Everything’, every small action done continuously will contribute towards a larger target. We are happy to work with Red on this sustainable and recycling project.

"It's amazing, Red can bring these two messages to life through her artwork. Through this art installation, we hope everyone will join us in our efforts to reduce, use and recycle while enjoying our coffee,” she said.

Worldwide efforts to increase recycling rates

To date, Nespresso has reached a 30% global recycling rate and is working to increase that percentage. Since 2014, this flagship coffee company has invested over CPH 185 million in recycling programmes in 53 countries.

Last year, Nespresso introduced the first coffee capsule in the market produced using 80% recycled aluminium as part of an initiative to minimise waste and maximise the reuse of product ingredients.

This year, Nespresso aims to have coffee capsules made entirely with recycled aluminium and all coffee machines sold in packaging made from 95% recycled materials.

Recycling in Malaysia: everyone's responsibilty

In Malaysia, Nespresso encourages consumers to participate in its recycling campaign. You can send your used capsules to the Nespresso Boutique at Gardens Mall or 1 Utama Shopping Centre.

You can also hand over used capsule bags to a Nespresso representative during the delivery of your next coffee order through the Recycling@Home initiative. The coffee grounds in these used capsules will be sent to local organic farms to be used as compost.

Through this effort, every single Nespresso capsule delivered by consumers will be fully utilised, maximising positive contributions to the community while minimising waste so that our planet remains vibrant and sustainable for future generations.
