WHEN I first met Sherrina Krishnan 10 years ago, she was busy rescuing cats and dogs and finding them homes. I adopted Lucky from her, who till today is at home happily being looked after by my daughter, Nanthini Doraisingam, a special child.

Together with co-founder Catherine Leyow, Sherrina founded Independent Pet Adoption Network to rescue and rehabilitate abandoned animals.

However, Covid-19 has proved challenging in 2020 and sadly, orphaned cats and kittens were found desperately looking for food around closed shops and eating areas, so both Catherine and Sherrina decided on a brilliant plan.

They would turn their hundreds and thousands of pictures taken of rescued and rehomed cats into a cat-inspired book that resembled an undated calendar. Each page has a picture of a beautiful cat with an inspired, quirky quote from thought leaders.

In the end, the calendar-book compilation ended up with 258 pages of cat images and each has a story behind it.

Their most successful yearly 101 campaign of Spay and Neuter, which ran since 2017, has resulted in hundreds of lives of cats being saved from certain death and abandonment.

Today, William Douglas Kendall, named after the owner who rescued him, is a pauper-to-prince story. Initially rescued from a park, at around nine months, he could not walk as it was suspected a car had hit him. Today, after many successful operations, he sits happily surrounded by luxury in his owner’s house in Bukit Tunku.

This appeal goes out to all cat lovers, buy this lovely inspirational book at only RM39.90, either in English or BM, and support all those endangered cats in need of food and veterinary care by giving them a home. It is a heart-warming Christmas present and a chance to give back to the community.

Christmas goods at every budget

Dignity for Children Foundation is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to providing teaching and training for 1,650 children and adults ranging from two to 18 years, including refugees and underprivileged and marginalised communities. It is the largest centre catering to this category of children and adults and is internationally recognised.

Based in Sentul, the Foundation decided to do something different this year for Christmas as times had been challenging in the face of Covid-19. They put together a Christmas Catalogue for all seasons with an array of gifts that includes Christmas Dinner, baked cookies, batik aprons, potholders, and lanyards with cardholders, kids’ drawing notebooks, and coasters and other interesting items at reasonable prices for every budget.

Some of the gifts are handmade by B-40 and migrant communities in the Sentul vicinity, while others are merchandise items purchased locally. The proceeds of the Christmas sale will allow more children to receive quality education at the Foundation.

All the proceeds from the sale go towards the Foundation’s programmes. If you prefer to feed the children rather than buy a gift, then feel free to purchase the e-gift certificate for RM50, which allows the Foundation to provide nutritious meals for 10 children.

Come support Fugee School

Fugee School was established in ten years ago to assist in the education of refugee children and youth and enhances their core values and skills so they can reach their full potential, and many are in transition before they get re-settled to other countries.

The school has around 200 children and a Youth Academy and while there is a small contribution for their education, money and resources are needed to run the school.

To sustain the school, Fugeelah was established as a social business enterprise and is a women-led conscious jewellery brand that educates, employs, and empowers refugee children and youth. Fugeelah is a meaningful collaboration between two friends. The limited-edition collection features a cocktail bag, an adjustable crossbody bag and a twilly that can be used in multiple ways.

For Christmas, Fugeelah will be releasing a festive capsule collection. Their best-selling Yara earrings will be making a comeback in two different sizes and in fun and bright colours. They are made in natural gemstones; these earrings are for jewellery lovers who want to make a statement with their outfit these holidays and beyond.

The Christmas Collection will be launched just before December 25 and will be available for purchase online at fugeelah.com and Frankitas Galler, Bukit Damansara. – The Vibes, December 11, 2020
