THE Sarawak government is striving to narrow the big divide that still exists between the rich and the poor, and the inequality of progress between urban and rural populations in this huge state, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
The state is also on the alert against extremist ideologies and working hard to curb these elements within society, he said in his message at the Miri City Christmas Parade held late last night.
“We acknowledge the important role that Christians play in this state, especially in terms of cultivating racial and religious unity.
“In the education aspects, the Christian educators, since the older days, have been playing crucial roles in bringing an education system that nurtured racial and religious harmony.
“The Christian educators have spread these values to all the people of Sarawak,” he said.
Abang Johari assured that the present state government will continue along this path and work hard to narrow the income gaps between different categories of people.
“Through the nurturing of good education values, we will also ensure extremist ideologies do not take root,” he said.
Johari’s message was delivered by Senadin assemblyman Datuk Lee Kim Shin.
Miri Mayor Adam Yii said the parade is an annual affair that sees all the Christian churches taking part.
“This annual event showcases the unity and harmony existing among our people of all religions and ethnic backgrounds.
“We can openly enjoy our religious festivities and take part freely,” he said.
Despite the rain last night, the crowd walked a 10km route through the city centre, singing Christmas carols and playing musical instruments.
At the Miri City Fan Recreation Centre, dances and songs entertained the crowd, with about 30,000 people turning out last night.
Over in Kuching city, a similar Christmas parade also lit up the state capital.
The Christian churches in Kuching held a walk through the city streets, singing and playing musical instruments.
