TAN Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan is adopting a ‘hands-off’ approach to the cooperation talks between leaders of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), and his younger brother's party, Sabah Star.
The PBS founder may have retired from politics but believed the cooperation talks should be allowed to take their course naturally, while still hopeful that the two parties would be able to work in “one big house.”
“I have questions, when we say let us “mogitatabang” (to help one another), let us be friends, let us work together to build a big house, or open a land together, are these not good? Certainly, they are.
“However, sincerity in pursuing these endeavours is paramount,” he told reporters in Penampang.
He said the ongoing cooperation efforts initiated by PBS and Star should be allowed to take its course as he believed both sides would eventually find common ground if they continue to engage in activities together.
“The negotiations have not been completed, right? Let them talk. Let them meet (together). Let them drink and dine with friends so we can see the results of their engagements. So now we wait.
“Another important thing is their intention. Many talked about unity, and wanting to work together. Not just Sabah Star and PBS. Others too. So we hope the result of their talks will eventually be for the good of Sabah.
“When they negotiate, they must be serious as we want to defend the future of Sabah, which is in the heart of all of us,” said Pairin, indicating his advice also extends to other political parties in Sabah, not just Sabah Star and PBS.
It has been reported that PBS and Sabah Star are expected to sign a cooperation deal this year after ideas had been floated to have the two parties merge in preparation of the state election in 2025. - The Vibes, January 15, 2023
