A SINGAPOREAN involved in a road rage incident on the North-South Expressway in Malaysia has been fined RM5,500 by a magistrate’s court in Muar.

Soh Kian Hui, 45, pleaded guilty to breaking the windshield of a car in a road rage incident at KM139.6 of the northbound North-South Expressway at 1.58pm last Saturday.

Magistrate Fatin Dalilah Khalid imposed the fine and ordered the accused, a taxi driver, to serve 12 months in prison if he failed to settle the fine.

According to the charge sheet,Soh was accused of breaking the rear windshield of a Toyota Fortuner belonging to Khairul Husni Shah Jamil, 31, resulting in a loss of RM2,502.35.

Soh paid the fine.

Videos of the incident also went viral on social media.

The accused was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief, which carries a jail term of one to five years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Ariff Marzuki prosecuted, while Norain Sakina Zikri represented Soh.

Soh had earlier appealed for a light sentence on the basis that he is a taxi driver making only around S$3,000 (RM10,630) and was looking after his 71-year-old mother who recently underwent cancer surgery.

However,  Mohammad Ariff requested a stiffer sentence as a deterrent in the interest of the public. - The Vibes, February 14, 2024
