GERMAN police have seized four rare Bugatti Veyron cars linked to the 1MDB scandal, according to reports in the German media.
The confiscated luxury vehicles are classified under the exclusive “Legends” series of Bugatti hyper cars.
Only 18 cars were produced under the series.
The four vehicles are the Veyron editions Rembrandt, Black Bess, Jean-Pierre Wimille and Meo Constantini.
Each car has a price of around US$3 million (RM14.3 million).
“The cars rarely come up for sale, and usually are not sold at public auction. The cars were located and seized by members of the Criminal Investigation Department 7, which specializes in white-collar crimes,” according to the German publication Bild.
It noted the cars were parked at the carpark of the Motorworld Munich, an automotive event space.
The report states that the seizure was in connection with investigations relating to 1MDB.
The 1MDB scandal involved personalities ranging from politicians and bankers to Hollywood stars and has led to criminal investigations in several countries.
Former prime minister Najib Razak has been imprisoned since August 23, 2022, after the Federal Court upheld his conviction for criminal breach of trust, abuse of power and money laundering over the misappropriation of SRC International Sdn Bhd’s funds.
The former leader faces several other charges, including the laundering of RM27 million involving funds from SRC International, a former 1MDB subsidiary.
The 70-year-old has served less than two years of his prison term when the Pardons Board, headed by the then king, announced his reduced jail term last February.
A judicial review is currently underway into his claim that the former Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, had added an addendum to the Pardons Board’s decision allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest. – April 28, 2024.
