PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has met Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Khalid Mashal in Qatar during his three-day official visit there.

The prime minister told the two Hamas leaders that Malaysia remained committed to playing a role at the international level to stop the attack on Rafah.

Anwar said that during the meeting, he was provided an update on the latest situation in war-torn Palestine, which has become subject to unrelenting attacks from Israel.

“Aside from relaying my condolences for the passing of Ismail’s family members who were killed in a cruel bombing by the Zionist regime, I was also given a briefing on the situation in Gaza and Rafah.

“Since the conflict erupted eight months ago, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been either killed or wounded, while half of Gaza has been permanently damaged by the Zionist regime’s cruelty,” Anwar wrote on Facebook this morning.

He said Malaysia was stepping up its efforts to aid Gaza war victims, especially via humanitarian, medical, and educational assistance.

Anwar also expressed his condolences to Ismail Haniyeh for the loss of his family members due to bombing by Israeli forces.

Last month, Ismail’s three sons and four of his grandchildren were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza.

“Malaysia appreciates Hamas’ readiness to release hostages, particularly children and women, and its willingness to accept the peace plan proposed by the Arab world, the OIC, and the international community,” he said.

“At the same time, Malaysia urges Israel to cease the massacre against Palestinians, free all Palestinian hostages, and agree to a peace treaty.” – May 14, 2024.
