DEPUTY Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi promised yesterday to help the Sarawak government rescue sick infrastructure projects the state that will benefit one million rural residents.

He has directed Rural and Regional Development Ministry officials in Putrajaya to liaise with the Works Ministry on projects that are delayed or abandoned in Sarawak.

"We acknowledge there are still areas in the state that doesn not have electricity and water supply. There are infrastructure projects related to roads and bridges that are still in bad shape. Longhouse repairs also to be given attention," he said.

"Even though some of these projects are not under federal jurisdiction, we will put in more effort to help," he said at a pre-Gawai dinner in Sibu hosted by by Parti Rakyat Sarawak.

Zahid said he will talk to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi about the delayed projects in Sarawak that need urgent attention.

Nanta has said that rural Sarawak lacks infracstructure and many basic amenities.

He had urged the federal and state governments to improve their delivery service to a sizeable population of rural folk who need electricity, tarred roads, treated water, and telecommunication coverage. – May 19, 2024.
