THE Kedah government is willing to sell treated water to Penang to meet the supply shortage in Nibong Tebal, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said.
Sungai Bakap constituents have long endured inconsistent water supply services, which the Penang Water Supply Corporation has pledged to resolve soon.
He said Sungai Bakap residents would benefit from the surplus of treated water from the neighbouring Lubuk Buntar treatment plant near Kulim.
“We do have treated water. So, if you want to buy it, we can sell it. It has to be bought, not taken for nothing as Penang is doing with the raw water from Sungai Muda,” he said at the launch of the Perikatan by-election machinery in the constituency.
The by-election was called after the PAS assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff, 56, died suddenly last month.
Sanusi said Penang should have enough water because it extracts twice as much of it as Kedah from Sungai Muda,
Yet the state seems to lack water, and Kedah feels compelled to help, he said.
"It is embarrassing that the Penang government, which makes a huge profit from selling water to industrial consumers, cannot resolve the water supply in Nibong Tebal.
“Isn't Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from Penang? It is unacceptable that this state faces basic issues on water supply,” – June 9, 2024.
