IT system outages that have been reported across the world have also affected flight operations in Malaysia, with carriers flying out of Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s Terminal 2 suffering severe glitches.

This has resulted in long queues and frustrated passengers at KLIA T2. Flights are also being delayed.

The disruptions are due to an issue at cybersecurity software firm CrowdStrike, which is affecting Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Local low-cost carrier AirAsia has reported that it is experiencing a system outage. However, there are no flight cancellations.

Passengers have taken to social media to share that they have been experiencing technical difficulties, forcing them to do manual check-ins.

“Last update! All check-in systems (online, kiosks) for AirAsia flights are experiencing technical difficulties. For those with flights in the near future, please arrive early at KLIA (T2).

“If you do not have a boarding pass or need to drop off luggage, you must queue at the counter,” shared X user Syahrul Azlan, reported Bernama.

Many have shared photographs of long queues at the airport.

“Our core reservation and check-in system is impacted by a global IT issue affecting airlines worldwide. You may experience slower check-ins and longer queues and we are doing our best to address this situation.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time,” said AirAsia in a statement.

Earlier, Firefly said in a statement that it was facing an outage in their Navitaire booking system, adding that passengers were not be able to book flights, manage bookings, or perform online check-ins.

Bernama also reported that Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (Mahb) services were not affected by the global IT outage that has resulted in major travel disruptions in Europe, the United States as well as Australian airports.

Similarly, Malaysia Airlines was also not reported to be affected.

While there seems to be no cancellations as of now, flights to destinations that have been affected by the global outage could affect Malaysia Airlines’ flights.

There have been news reports coming from all over the globe pertaining to travel disruptions.

A major problem with computer systems is disrupting transport, broadcasters, hospitals and other sectors across the world.

The reports cited issues linked to global cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike.

CrowdStrike Holdings Inc is an American cybersecurity technology company based in Austin, Texas. It provides penetration workload and endpoint security, threat intelligence and cyberattack services.

Microsoft meanwhile said issues affecting its Windows devices were from a third-party software platform's update, adding that it was expecting to resolve the issue soon.

"We're aware of an issue affecting Windows devices due to an update from a third-party software platform. We anticipate a resolution is forthcoming," a spokesperson has been reported as saying.

The tech giant earlier today told AFP it was taking "mitigation actions" for service disruptions.

In a notice titled "Service Degradation", Microsoft said users "may be unable to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services". – July 19, 2024.
