THE Malaysian Meteorological Department has urged the public to cease all open burning activities to minimise haze risk during the dry period.

Director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah told Kosmo! that the ongoing southwest monsoon is expected to bring hotter and drier days, with many areas experiencing reduced rainfall, until September.

However, the squall line phenomenon could still bring heavy rains, strong winds, and thunderstorms to the west coast of the peninsula, Sabah, and northern Sarawak, he said.

Squall lines are lines of thunderstorms caused by concentrated wind.

The Borneo Post reported that MetMalaysia has issued a Level 1 heatwave warning for Sri Aman and Bintulu in Sarawak; Kuala Krai in Kelantan; Larut and Matang in Perak; and Kota Marudu in Sabah. The alert is triggered when temperatures reach between 35C and 37C for three consecutive days.

An orange alert (Level 2) is issued when temperatures soar to between  37C and 40C for a stretch of three days, while a red alert indicates an extreme heatwave when temperatures exceed 40C for three days in a row.

Yesterday, MetMalaysia also issued a hot weather warning for Larut, Matang and Kuala Kangsar in Perak; Gombak in Selangor; Kuala Krai in Kelantan; and Raub, Temerloh, Maran, Bentong, and Rompin in Pahang. Temperatures are projected to reach between 35°C and 37°C for at least three consecutive days in these areas. – July 27, 2024.
