PARTI Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has established its Sarawak elections committee to prepare for the upcoming state polls, which are due in 2026 but may be called earlier than expected. The committee's formation follows a state-level leadership meeting in Kuching today.

State PKR information chief Tay Wei Wei said the party is gearing up early for the Sarawak elections to ensure its grassroots machinery is operational as soon as possible.

"Our 31 PKR branches throughout Sarawak are now in preparation mode for the coming Sarawak state elections.

"Today, we called 400 of the branch leaders to attend this state-level meeting.

"We have established the Sarawak State Elections Committee, complete with office bearers and a lineup to oversee the various sub-committees that will handle tasks related to ground preparations," he told reporters.

Tay mentioned that the committee includes members from both urban and rural districts.

He added that the Sarawak State Elections Committee will also prepare for the next general elections, which will feature contests for parliamentary seats in Sarawak.

Sarawak is the only state that holds its state polls separately from the national general elections.

On 1 August, Sarawak PKR announced that it will field candidates in the coming Sarawak state elections to ensure democracy and give the rakyat a voice.

State PKR chairman Roland Engan emphasised the importance of having a party that will advocate for the needs of the rakyat in Sarawak.

Although PKR has a working relationship with the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) at the federal level, Sarawak PKR remains in opposition at the state level.

"The people of Sarawak need an alternative voice. In Sarawak, the need for such an alternative voice is especially crucial," he said.

On 26 July, comments made by Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) president Datuk Larry Sng, suggesting that Sarawak Pakatan Harapan parties should stay out of the coming Sarawak State Elections and join GPS, sparked a war of words with Sarawak PKR.

Sarawak PKR information chief Tay Wei Wei criticised Sng for trying to stir up controversies.

"Larry Sng should focus on how to build up his own party.

"PBM only has one seat, one parliamentary seat.

"He should stop trying to gain publicity by mocking other parties," Tay said in a press statement.

Tay stated that Sng had insinuated in social media comments that Sarawak PKR and Sarawak DAP are irrelevant in Sarawak and cannot defeat GPS. Sng had suggested that Sarawak PH should join GPS instead. – August 11, 2024.
