THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested the chairman and director of a company that manages the purchase and sale of subsidised diesel in Sibu for their alleged involvement in corrupt practices.

The chairman in his sixties carries the title “Datuk” while the director is a woman, also in her sixties.

MACC, in a press statement, said the two were detained on suspicion of being involved in illegal diesel transactions.

"Their company is involved in the sales of subsidised diesel and the suspects are believed to be embezzling subsidised diesel and selling it for profits.

"To protect themselves, they are believed to have offered bribes to several enforcement officers," said MACC.

The suspects are being remanded and will be charged after investigations, it added.

Diesel is still being sold in Sarawak at prices subsidised by the federal government.

Diesel smuggling is a major problem in Sarawak, with numerous cases of illegal sales being detected in many rural and urban districts in the state. - October 9, 2024
