THE drug flow from Kalimantan into Sarawak at the border region in the heart of central Sarawak is getting worse, along with the trafficking of illegal foreign workers into the state from the border pockets.

Member of Parliament for Hulu Rajang, Datuk Wilson Ugak, said he had highlighted these issues in the Dewan Rakyat recently and hopes something can be done soon.

"There are rapid developments taking place now in Kalimantan and this can be seen by the increase in activities along the border with Sarawak.

"Locals in the Sarawak side have expressed worries that drug problems have increased, with drugs flowing freely into the state.

"There are also foreigners illegally crossing into this state and there is an urgent need for tighter security control.

"The nearest settlement on the Sarawak side, Long Nawang, is only 20 km away from Kalimantan and locals are calling for more security personnel to guard our border," he said in his updates to the Sarawak media.

Hulu Rajang is as big as the state of Pahang and much of the constituency along the border consists of mountains.

Ugak said he hopes that the Sarawak government will also look into the border security infrastructure since Sarawak has been given up to RM5.9 bil in development funds in the new Budget. - October 24, 2024
