SCAM victims nationwide lost a shocking RM 547.3 million to investment frauds and other scams via telecommunication platforms and social media for the first nine months of this year.
That is a big surge compared to last year which recorded RM 472.2 million in losses to such scams.
Member of Parliament for Stampin, Chong Chien Jen, said the worrying surge in such cases nationwide shows that the authorities need to devise more effective enforcement methods.
"The Government must also take much stricter actions against those banks that allowed mule accounts to operate," said Chong who is Sarawak DAP chairman in his latest media updates.
Recent reports revealed that Sarawak was among the states with the highest number of scam cases.
Earlier this year, a deputy state minister said Sarawakians continue to fall victim to scams every day, including highly educated professionals living and working in cities and big towns, despite repeated warnings from the police.
This is a very disturbing trend, said State Deputy Minister for Education, Technology Innovation and Talents Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.
