SIX states in Malaysia are expected to bear the full force of the coming monsoon that is expected to start later this month and last until March next year.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department issued its latest warning urging the state authorities to be fully prepared for the coming weather.
Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah are the states predicted to be worst-hit by the North East Monsoon (called the landas season in Sarawak) starting later this month until end of December.
In January and February next year, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah are predicted to still bear the full brunt of the heavy rainfall.
Department Director General Dr. Mohd Hisham Anip in his statement, said the above states are expected to see intense rain and floods, but the other peninsular states may also feel the impact too.
He said heavy rain and floods may be the norm as there are expected to be up to seven episodes of sustained heavy rainfall that may cause low lying areas and riverine settlements to be inundated.
"As for the other states, they too will be affected if the heavy rain spreads.
"If the heavy rainfall is sustained continuously for several days, and this coincides with a low pressure atmosphere pattern, the situation could be worsened," he said.
Mohd Hisham called on all states to get ready for the looming horizon that is fast approaching. - November 2, 2024
