HER relentless threats and legal setbacks may have made it difficult. But Clare Rewcastle Brown says she was never truly alone — ordinary Malaysians rallied by her side, bolstering her fight for accountability.
“One thing I’d love to share is my deep gratitude to so many people in Malaysia who contributed to the costs of my court case,” Rewcastle Brown said, describing the support she received as a humbling show of solidarity.
From small contributions to large, Malaysians came together to cover the RM435,000 fine ordered by the Kuala Terengganu court, a burden she felt should never have been placed on the public. “The entire financial burden was thankfully covered by others,” she said, adding that a generous donor stepped in to cover the remaining amount.
The legal trouble stems from a single line in her 2018 book, The Sarawak Report: The Inside Story of the 1MDB Exposé, that misrepresented details about the Sultanah of Terengganu. Though the book was corrected years ago, Rewcastle Brown remains held accountable for the error — facing not only fines but a criminal defamation sentence.
In February 2024, a Kuala Terengganu court sentenced her in absentia to two years in prison for criminal defamation, a verdict that international press organisations have condemned as a blow to media freedom.
When her appeal was dismissed in September, Malaysia’s Federal Court stipulated that any further challenges would require her presence in the country, effectively preventing her from returning due to the risk of arrest.
Rewcastle Brown, a nearly lone voice when she first reported on 1MDB, faced surveillance, hacking attempts, and an Interpol red notice — pressures that make returning to Malaysia legally unsafe.
Yet she credits Malaysians' support as the force that kept her going.
Now, as her six-year legal battle comes to a close, Rewcastle Brown reflects on the “incredible support” she received, saying she was overwhelmed by Malaysians’ commitment and resilience, which gave her the strength to hold powerful figures to account. – November 13, 2024
