THE Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) has taken a tough stand against electricity theft, initiating court proceedings against individuals and companies accused of tampering with electric metres.

The thefts have reportedly caused losses exceeding RM3 million to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SE).

“Raids conducted since May 2024 uncovered metre tampering activities that prevented accurate readings of electricity usage. Suspiciously low billing records triggered investigations,” ECoS CEO Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said.

The crackdown has led to five cases being filed in the Sandakan Sessions Court under Section 61(3) of the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024.

Those convicted could face fines ranging from RM20,000 to RM1 million, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.

Nasser revealed that ECoS plans to prosecute nine more cases, stressing the need for firm action to curb rampant electricity theft and safeguard the reliability of Sabah’s energy supply.

During separate hearings on November 10 and 11, individuals Wong Kin Hong, Chang Wan Yee, and Wan Kok Hsiung, along with companies Phoenix Series (S) Sdn Bhd and Sama Marketing Sdn Bhd, pleaded guilty to electricity theft.

Each was fined RM20,000, with a six-month jail term imposed if fines are unpaid.

“Such prosecutions are essential to combat electricity theft and prevent further revenue losses for SE. ECoS will not tolerate violations under the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024,” Nasser added.

ECoS, established in January 2023, serves as Sabah’s energy regulator. Its mandate includes ensuring sustainable, secure, and affordable energy for the state while protecting consumer and environmental interests. - November 16, 2024
