SOME 150 people protested against the conduct of the Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB), which they claimed was managed wrongly.

The gathering was the first to be held at the Polo Ground, which is in front of the official residence of the Yang di - Pertua Negri.

An official from the Governor's office came forward to accept a memorandum from the protestors because it was the former who gave consent to the appointment of PHEB board members.

The group singled out PHEB chairman RSN Rayer and also questioned if DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng had played a role in the appointment of Rayer.

The group also questioned the appointment of DAP Senator Dr RA Lingeswaran as the PHEB vice-chairman.

There were a total of 10 disputes, which they had listed in the memorandum.

R. Ganeson, who is the DAP Happy Valley branch chairman, said that the protest was about the rights of the Hindus.

"Do not get me wrong. This is a Hindu gathering. It is not politics," said Ganeson, who pointed to the presence of former Penang deputy chief minister II Dr P. Ramasamy and former PHEB chief executive officer Datuk M. Ramachandran, who is a veteran unionist.

Ramachandran said that he was present as a Hindu, who is aggrieved with what has transpired in the board since it came under the stewardship of Rayer.

The MACC has launched an investigation into the PHEB over the decision to produce a "Golden Chariot" during the annual Thaipusam celebrations. - December 22, 2024.
