PLANNING for the Sarawak Infectious Disease Research Centre (SIDRC) Centre is being fast-tracked to ensure it can get off the ground this year.
Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC), a state government agency, is in charge of this project.
SRDC general manager Dr Peter Nissom said that the study on infectious diseases in Sarawak is a new field that will see intensive use of sophisticated scientific technologies.
"Our role in the SRDC is to give direction in scientific innovation and technology advancement in Sarawak.
"We want to see the infectious disease research centre for Sarawak become a reality very soon.
"This project is very important as we in Sarawak have to face and deal with more new diseases in our public health sectors.
"Two other proposed research facilities are also being given priority attention along with the Sarawak Infectious Disease Research Centre.
"They are the Sarawak Science Centre and Sarawak Micro Semiconductor Design Centre,” he said.
As Sarawak progresses, he said there are new challenges in the medical and science sectors that require more technology to find solutions.
Dr Nissom said there are many new frontiers in medical sciences and other scientific fields to be explored in this vast state.
The fields of research are still relatively new in Sarawak and will require a lot of groundwork in terms of infrastructure facilities and sourcing for experts to handle these researches, he added. - January 10, 2025
