SARAWAK will build its new Kuching International Airport in the Samarahan district in the southern part of the state.
Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the state government has decided on the location for the multi-billion ringgit project.
Speaking at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Southern Sarawak zone delegates meeting, he said Tanjung Embang in Samarahan district is the ideal location.
"Initially we proposed Matang for the new international airport.
"However, that location is too near the border with Kalimantan.
"There will be complications if aircraft have to enter Kalimantan airspace first to land at the new airport, so we have decided on Tanjung Embang," he said.
Johari said the new airport will benefit Kuching and Serian as well.
The new airport will be built within the next five years, he said.
"We want to complete the new airport within the 13th Malaysia Plan.
"It will propel the socio-economic transformation of Sarawak, along with a new seaport we are going to build," he added.
Johari said financing these new mega projects will require about RM 100 billion. - January 20, 2025
