PENANG Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow hopes to make Penang an icon of unity as the state has a diverse mix of races, culture and religions.

As Penang marks Thaipusam with thousands of devotees, visitors and tourists flocking to the Waterfall area here, Chow said that despite the rapid development in the state, traditions of diverse religions and practices, continue to be upheld.

"We will be fair and equal to all communities and ensure no segment is left behind in seeking prosperity," said Chow in a Thaipusam message.

Besides the focus on manufacturing, investments, services and agro-technology, Penang is now in the midst of readying itself for the "Visit Malaysia Year 2026" campaign, especially with the state being marketed as a heritage - driven tourism destination.

Chow also touched on the success of direct flights between Chennai (India) and Penang which recorded a growth of 51.43% in tourists from India at the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas since the flights began last year.

Tourists from India would add more meaning to the Thaipusam celebrations here, he noted.

To ensure the success of the state's endeavours, Chow emphasised on securing support from the Indian and all communities, who co - exist in Penang.

Meanwhile, roads in certain stretches of George Town are now congested as the Golden and Silver chariots will begin their respective sacred passages to the  Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple in Waterfalls here. – February 10, 2025
