IN a move to bolster ties between the two nations, Malaysia and Turkey have signed 11 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s official visit to Malaysia from February 10 to 11.

The agreements cover a broad spectrum of sectors, including energy, defense, trade, media, and disaster management.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and President Erdoğan witnessed the exchange of these crucial documents, which are set to deepen the cooperation between the two countries.

Bernama reported today, one of the standout agreements was the MoU on energy transition, which was signed by Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, and Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar.

This deal aims to foster closer collaboration in the field of sustainable energy.

In the area of disaster management, Malaysia’s National Disaster Management Agency and Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) exchanged an MoU aimed at improving joint efforts in disaster response and mitigation.

Additionally, both countries formalised a commitment to enhancing diplomatic training cooperation.

The scientific and technological collaboration between the two nations was also reinforced, as Malaysia's Sultan Mizan Antarctic Research Foundation and Turkey's Polar Research Institute under TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) signed an MoU to further research in both Antarctic and Arctic regions.

Defense ties between Malaysia and Turkey received a significant boost with two important agreements.

The first focused on government-to-government defense procurement and the creation of a Joint Committee for Defense Products, which was signed by Malaysia’s Defense Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, and Turkey’s Secretary of Defense Industries, Prof. Haluk Görgün.

The second agreement involves strategic communications systems, formalized between Malaysia’s National Security Council and Turkey’s Defense Industries Secretariat.

The collaboration on technology and innovation also extended to the smart cities sector, with Malaysia’s Selangor Aviation and Technology Innovation SB and Turkey’s Defense Industries Secretariat joining forces to work on advanced solutions in smart city planning, traffic management, and security systems.

On the trade front, Malaysia’s Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living and Turkey’s Ministry of Trade exchanged an MoU to improve consumer protection, market surveillance, and inspection mechanisms, promoting more robust trade relations between the two countries.

Additionally, Malaysia’s Ministry of Home Affairs signed an agreement to acquire a multi-purpose mission ship for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, to be procured from Turkey's Desan Shipyard.

In the media domain, Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Turkey’s Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) signed an MoU to enhance cooperation in audiovisual media services. Moreover, the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and Turkey’s Anadolu Agency formalized an agreement to strengthen information and communications cooperation, enhancing media ties between the nations.

These 11 MoUs reflect the growing bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Turkey, highlighting their commitment to expanding cooperation in key strategic, economic, and cultural areas.

In 2024, Turkey emerged as Malaysia's third-largest trading partner, the largest export destination, and the fourth-largest import source among West Asian countries.

The total trade between the two nations reached RM24.13 billion (USD5.28 billion) in 2024, marking an 18.7% increase compared to the previous year.

The signing of these MoUs serves as a clear signal of the shared goal to deepen the strategic partnership between Malaysia and Turkey, paving the way for further collaboration in the years to come. – February 11, 2025
