ANOTHER DAP veteran – the fourth so far - M. Kulasegaran, a prominent Ipoh-based lawyer also today decided to stay away from the coming central executive council (CEC) elections next month.
The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department cited the same reasons as former DAP chairman Tan Kok Wai and party treasurer - general Fong Kui Lun when they withdrew.
The need to make way for younger leaders.
Another DAP veteran from Butterworth, Datuk Seri Phee Boon Poh also declined a shot at the CEC after he was nominated by branches in Penang.
"I've decided to withdraw from the race to make way for younger leaders," said Kulasegaran, who is affectionately called Kula in Perak.
The Perak DAP strongman has been with the party for the last 30 years.
Kulasegaran is also mulling his political future, citing that he is tired with the excessive politicking taking place.
Nonetheless, he urged the delegates not to forget the sacrifices that some of their leaders had made, which saw them endure arrests, persecution, and intimidation.
He recalled times when some of the party veterans had to spend their own money to attend events and assist in elections.
“These dedicated members are still with us today, and we must continue to honour their contributions. I hope they will not be forgotten."
Kulasegaran urged the party to champion the rights of working-class Malaysians and human rights.
The coming election next month, will see over 1,000 delegates decide the future leadership of the socialism - based party.
It is being pitched as a battle between the young and old with the incumbent DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng under the spotlight, after it was alleged that at the age of 64, he might want to consider retiring.
Nepotism is also reigning high among the delegates as Lim is the son of Kit Siang whereas the deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo, is the son of iconic DAP leader the late Datuk Seri Karpal Singh Deo. - February 21, 2025.
