PERAK State Assembly Speaker, Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid, has announced that the Election Commission (EC) will be notified as early as Tuesday regarding the vacancy of the Ayer Kuning seat.

The seat became vacant following the passing of Ayer Kuning Assemblyman Ishsam Shahruddin, 59, who tragically collapsed after participating in a friendly football match at Bandaraya Stadium in Georgetown, Penang, on the previous day, Bernama reported today.

Zahir briefly informed the media about the notice of vacancy when he was at the late assemblyman's residence.

As per regulations, a by-election must be held within 60 days after the EC receives the official notice of the vacancy.

The last by-election held in Perak was for the Slim state seat on August 29, 2020.

In the meantime, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, along with several state executive councillors, visited Ishsam's family to offer their condolences.

Following an autopsy at Penang Hospital, Ishsam’s remains were brought back to his residence around 12:30 a.m. From there, the body was taken to Masjid An-Nur for the funeral rites before being laid to rest at the Rapat Setia Muslim Cemetery. – February 23, 2025
