Anwar urges moderation in Ramadan spending, avoid extravagant packaging
“We should embrace the true essence and spirit of Ramadan” PM says - March 3, 2025

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on government agencies and government-linked companies to exercise moderation in their spending during Ramadan, specifically urging them to avoid extravagant packaging for aid items.

Addressing the monthly assembly at the Prime Minister’s Department, Anwar expressed concern over the excessive costs associated with the packaging of donated goods, particularly dates, which he noted sometimes end up costing more than the aid itself.

"I urge all official government functions throughout Ramadan, whether organised by ministries or departments, to be held in moderation.

“We should embrace the true essence and spirit of Ramadan," Anwar said, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing meaningful support over unnecessary excess.

He criticised the wastefulness of lavish packaging, asking, "What use do people have for such boxes? It would be more meaningful to focus on the actual aid given rather than the extravagance of the packaging."

The Prime Minister stressed that resources intended for charity should be more effectively utilized to benefit those in need. His comments reflect a broader push for more mindful and responsible spending during the holy month, ensuring that aid reaches those who require it the most rather than being spent on unnecessary adornments.

Meanwhile, Anwar urged Malaysians to embrace Ramadan as a month dedicated to reading, understanding, and reflecting on the teachings of the Quran, emphasizing its significance as a guide for humanity.

"Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed, serving as a guide to distinguish between right and wrong," Anwar said, highlighting the importance of this sacred month for spiritual growth and reflection.

He encouraged all Muslims to take advantage of this holy month to deepen their understanding and practice of the Quran.

"Let us all seize this opportunity to study and live by the teachings of the Quran," he added, stressing the need for a deeper connection with the Quran’s messages during Ramadan.

The assembly was attended by Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, as well as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, Bernama cited. – March 3, 2025
