THE Police has referred the investigation into a viral video involving three radio presenters allegedly mocking a religious ceremony to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) on Thursday.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed today that the police have received 73 reports regarding the incident. “So far, no other individuals have been called in for questioning,” he stated.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. These provisions address offenses related to religious insult and misuse of communication services.
Razarudin stressed the police’s commitment to handling issues related to race, religion, and the monarchy (3R) with seriousness, particularly when it concerns religious matters.
“We take stern action using all existing laws, regardless of who is involved in 3R issues,” he said.
He also warned the public to avoid engaging in topics that could create disharmony, as they could potentially lead to divisions and tension, threatening the security of Malaysia, a nation diverse in religions and ethnicities.
On Wednesday, six individuals from the radio station involved in the incident appeared at the Bukit Aman Police Headquarters to provide their statements. The investigation is being led by the Bukit Aman Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT).
Razarudin revealed that the controversial video had been viewed 95,400 times and shared by 204 users on social media then, although the radio station had since removed the video.
After facing widespread backlash, the three radio presenters involved issued an apology for their actions, acknowledging that the video had mocked a religious ceremony.
In light of the public outrage, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to conduct a thorough investigation.
This follows numerous complaints from various parties regarding the conduct of the radio station’s staff. – March 6
