THE police have confirmed that no Malaysians were involved in the shooting and explosion that took place in Sungai Golok, Thailand, on the evening of March 8.

Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said there was no connection between Malaysian nationals and the violent attack.

In response to the incident, which left two Thai security personnel dead and eight others injured, security measures along the Malaysia-Thailand border will be heightened.

"All police station chiefs and the General Operations Force have been ordered to increase control in high-risk areas, particularly illegal entry points, with 24-hour surveillance," Bernama cited Mamat saying in an official statement tonight.

The Thai police reported that the attack occurred at a security checkpoint outside the Sungai Golok district office, located along the Sungai Golok-Sungai Padi Road. According to the authorities, a group of assailants opened fire and threw multiple grenades at the site around 7:10 pm, resulting in the fatalities and injuries.

Since the beginning of Ramadan, Thai authorities have been ramping up security measures in the area, and they are now intensifying their efforts in the aftermath of this attack. – March 9, 2025
