A decision on Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s request to drop three money laundering charges related to SRC International Sdn Bhd funds, totaling RM27 million, will be made on May 6.
Bernama reported today, High Court Judge K. Muniandy set the date following a request from the prosecution during a case management session.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul informed the court that the prosecution was seeking a new date to update the court on the status of Najib's representation.
"The representation submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) in August 2023 has yet to be decided. Therefore, we request a suitable case management date to inform the court of the decision," Bernama cited Mohd Ashrof saying today.
Najib's lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, informed the court that the defense would be submitting an additional letter to the AGC seeking feedback on the representation filed last year.
"The letter seeks feedback on the representation submitted to the AGC in August 2023," Muhammad Shafee said.
Furthermore, Muhammad Shafee requested that previously scheduled trial dates—from May 19 to 23 and April 21 to 25, 2025—be vacated due to his involvement in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case and two other criminal cases.
Judge Muniandy granted this request, setting the next case management for May 6, when the prosecution is expected to provide an update on the representation.
Najib, the former Prime Minister, is facing three money laundering charges for allegedly receiving RM27 million in illegal proceeds through three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank Berhad on July 8, 2014.
He was charged under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, which carries a penalty of up to RM5 million in fines, up to five years in prison, or both, upon conviction.
Currently serving a jail term in Kajang Prison for the misappropriation of RM42 million in SRC International funds, Najib had filed a petition for a royal pardon on September 2, 2022.
As a result, on January 29, 2023, the Pardons Board reduced his sentence from 12 to six years and lowered his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million. – March 10, 2025
