EACH flood-affected family in Beaufort and Membakut will receive RM1,300 cash aid, along with food supplies, as part of emergency relief from the federal and state governments.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who visited the worst-hit areas today, said the aid consists of RM1,000 from the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and RM300 from Yayasan Kebajikan Sabah (YKS).
“I came here to meet the victims, to see for myself what they’re going through,” he said after stopping at Dewan Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Dun Banir, where 147 families — 412 people in total — are taking shelter.
The floods, which began on March 7, have forced 1,944 people from 614 families to seek refuge at seven relief centres in Beaufort.
Hajiji later toured Beaufort town, still submerged in floodwaters, before heading to Membakut, where four relief centres have been set up.
At Dewan Kesenian Islam, he met with some of the 836 victims from 278 families currently housed there and handed out similar aid.
He assured victims that the government is working to prevent further flooding and has ordered the Irrigation and Drainage Department to clear clogged waterways.
“This isn’t just about immediate relief. We need to make sure this doesn’t keep happening,” he said.
