THE Democratic Action Party (DAP) has announced the establishment of the P. Patto Education Fund to honour the contributions of the late Bagan Member of Parliament, P. Patto, to the party.
DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke revealed today that this year marks the 30th anniversary of Patto's passing, a milestone which will be commemorated through this new initiative aimed at supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“The P. Patto Education Fund will be established to assist students from underprivileged families. The mechanism will be discussed, and an announcement will be made soon,” Loke shared during his policy speech at the 18th DAP National Congress.
Loke acknowledged that many younger and newer members of the party may not be familiar with Patto due to the passage of time since his death three decades ago. However, he emphasised Patto’s significant legacy within the party.
"For those unfamiliar with Patto, he was a great party fighter, a vocal member of Parliament, and a strong advocate for the oppressed," Loke remarked.
In his speech, Loke also took the opportunity to express his appreciation for the veterans of the party, recognising their long-standing contributions.
He paid tribute to several prominent figures, including Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai, M. Kulasegaran, the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), and Jannie Lasimbang, the Kapayan State Assemblywoman.
Loke also acknowledged their decision not to seek re-election to the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), highlighting the selfless dedication they had shown to the party’s continued growth and success.
Empowering Woman Leaders
Meanwhile, in a progressive move for women’s representation, Loke introduced two significant initiatives at the congress that aim to empower women within the party.
He announced that the position of the DAP Women's Chief will now be made a permanent member of the CEC.
Furthermore, Loke outlined a new requirement for future general elections, stating that 30% of DAP’s candidates for parliamentary seats will be women, starting from the 16th General Election.
