Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged all parties involved in the relocation of the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple in Jalan Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur, to engage in constructive discussions and find a peaceful resolution.
The government, he said, is focused on ensuring the smooth transfer of the temple to a new location while maintaining harmony and respect among all parties.
Anwar, speaking to the press after Friday prayers at the Sultan Abdul Samad Mosque at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), expressed hope that all stakeholders would continue working towards an amicable solution to the issue.
He emphasised that cooperation was key to ensuring the matter is resolved efficiently.
"I hope the ongoing efforts to find the best solution will continue. We must avoid unnecessary conflict," Anwar remarked.
"There are individuals who are using religion for their own agendas, including lawyers who have no involvement in Hindu religious activities, making statements such as calling for the demolition of the temple. I cannot fathom being Prime Minister and demolishing any place of worship or religious activity," he added.
Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, clarified that the land in question was not government-owned but was private property owned by a private entity since 2012. The landowner has decided to build a mosque on the site.
"The temple on the land is not legally authorised, but in the spirit of maintaining harmony, the landowner has agreed to offer some assistance. Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has already identified a replacement site to avoid any further complications," he explained.
He also urged against any unwarranted reactions, especially from the Muslim community, stressing the importance of handling the situation in a civilised manner. "The mosque will be built, and a new site for the temple will be provided. I hope there will be no inappropriate responses," he added.
According to recent reports, discussions regarding the temple’s relocation are progressing smoothly, with the Jakel Group, the temple management, and DBKL working together to resolve the matter.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr. Maimunah Mohd Sharif confirmed that DBKL is acting as a facilitator to ensure that the relocation process goes smoothly and the issue is settled amicably.
The relocation process is expected to be completed in due course, with all parties committed to maintaining peace and unity throughout the procedure. – March 21, 2025
