A MAN was killed after being electrocuted while reportedly trying to steal cables belonging to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) in Taman Silibin Ria, near the Petronas highway on the Ipoh-Lumut route, yesterday evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:07 pm, when the 38-year-old man, along with another individual, was attempting to cut the TNB cables.

According to Ipoh District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, witnesses were able to capture a video at the scene, showing the two men cutting the cables, believed to be for theft, when a sudden explosion occurred, causing both men to collapse unconscious.

"One of the suspects later regained consciousness and managed to flee the scene on a Honda C100 motorcycle. The case has been classified as a sudden death," Abang Zainal Abidin confirmed in a statement.

Authorities revealed that TNB had filed a police report regarding the theft attempt, prompting an investigation to be launched under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which pertains to theft. Initial police inquiries also revealed that the deceased had a history of criminal activity, with 10 previous records involving violent crimes and property offences.
