PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has praised the sacrifices of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), calling them the cornerstone of the nation's peace and prosperity.

His comments came as he marked the 218th Police Day, celebrated today, and reflected on the invaluable contributions of PDRM officers to the well-being of the country.

In his Facebook post, Anwar called on Malaysians, particularly Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan, to reflect on and appreciate the hard work of police personnel, who often work around the clock to ensure the public can live peacefully and practice their faith without fear.

“As Malaysians, it is our responsibility to appreciate the efforts of PDRM in maintaining peace. We are grateful for all the services and sacrifices made for our beloved Malaysia!” Anwar stated.

Wishing PDRM a Happy 218th Police Day, Anwar expressed his hopes that the force would continue to excel in its duties, ensuring that the country remains peaceful and prosperous for future generations.

"On this meaningful day, we celebrate Police Day together, remembering and honouring the contributions and sacrifices of police officers who continue to serve with loyalty and dedication, ensuring the peace and well-being of our beloved country,” he said.

Reflecting on the rich history of PDRM, Anwar pointed out that the force's roots go back to the establishment of the Home Guard on March 25, 1807, and the Melaka Sultanate era, where roles like the Temenggung were responsible for enforcing customary and Syariah law.

The Prime Minister continued, "This role evolved with the establishment of the modern police force, starting in Penang and later expanding to other states, leading to the formation of the Straits Settlements Police Force in 1871."

Anwar also acknowledged the critical role played by PDRM in confronting the Communist insurgency during the Emergency period (1948-1960) and later threats such as terrorism. He credited the police, especially the Special Branch, for their exceptional intelligence gathering and operations that neutralised such threats and safeguarded national stability. – March 25, 2025
