TEN men have been arrested following a violent altercation at a firecracker sales site in Sungai Ara, Bayan Lepas, last night.

The disturbance, which took place around 10.15 pm, was reportedly sparked by a dispute between two competing vendors selling firecrackers in the area.

Barat Daya District Police Chief ACP Sazalee Adam confirmed that a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Barat Daya Police Headquarters, together with officers from the Bayan Lepas Police Station, responded quickly to the scene after receiving reports of the altercation.

"The conflict arose between two premises selling firecrackers. Our officers acted promptly to resolve the situation, leading to the arrest of 10 men aged between 15 and 41, who are believed to have been involved in the brawl," Sazalee said in a statement today.

All of the suspects have been remanded for three days, until April 3, while police continue their investigation under Section 148 of the Penal Code, which pertains to rioting with weapons.

The police chief also urged the public to refrain from making speculations that could disrupt public order.

The brawl, which involved a group of men, quickly gained attention after several images of the incident were shared widely on social media platforms. – April 1, 2025
