PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Law by Shenandoah University, United States, in recognition of his enduring contributions to leadership, community development, and the promotion of universal human values.
Bernama cited today that the award was formally presented by Shenandoah University President, Dr Tracy Fitzsimmons, during a ceremony held at the Cultural Activities Centre of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Gombak campus.
Also present at the event was Selangor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shaari.
In his acceptance speech, Anwar was keen to highlight that the honour was not bestowed upon him simply by virtue of his current office.
“Shenandoah University was established long before I became Prime Minister. This award was not conferred upon me because I happen to be a Prime Minister, but for the work we do together—years, decades—working towards the promotion of freedom and human dignity,” he said.
Following the award ceremony, Anwar took part in an open dialogue session titled ‘Meet Anwar@IIUM: A Special Homecoming’, engaging with members of the university community, particularly students.
In a statement released by IIUM, the university noted that the event drew nearly 3,000 attendees, comprising staff and students alike.
“Anwar's presence at IIUM holds special significance, as he was the university’s second President (from 1988 to 1999),” the statement read.
His return to the university was described as a “sirih pulang ke gagang”— a Malay proverb symbolising a meaningful return to one’s roots. During his tenure as IIUM President, the institution witnessed substantial growth and development, much of which is still visible today.
The recognition from Shenandoah University not only underscores Anwar’s long-standing international reputation as a reformist and advocate of civil liberties, but also marks a poignant moment in his decades-long association with IIUM. – April 11, 2025
