BARISAN Nasional (BN) will not be holding large-scale political ceramahs during the campaign period for the Ayer Kuning state by-election, according to its chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Speaking to reporters after the close of nominations at Dewan Merdeka in Tapah, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said the coalition would instead focus on a more personal, grassroots approach—engaging directly with voters on the ground.
“We will prioritise a voter-friendly approach by reaching out and connecting with each constituent in Ayer Kuning,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid added that opposition parties would likely struggle to raise significant local issues and instead might resort to national-level criticisms. He expressed confidence that BN is well-prepared to address any concerns raised.
“The answers we provide, God willing, will not only satisfy voters here but also serve as effective clarification for the issues being brought up,” he stated.
Ahmad Zahid, who also serves as Minister of Rural and Regional Development, assured that the government is committed to enhancing infrastructure and development in Ayer Kuning, a predominantly rural area.
“Ayer Kuning is a rural constituency, and the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development will consider continuous infrastructure improvements in the area. We hope the voters will rally behind BN’s candidate, Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, who has pledged to carry on the legacy of the late Ishsam Shahruddin,” he added.
Dr Mohamad Yusri, the UMNO Tapah Division Secretary, is contesting under the BN banner in a three-way battle against Perikatan Nasional’s Abdul Muhaimin Malek and Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s Bawani KS.
The by-election is being held following the death of the former assemblyman, Ishsam Shahruddin, 58, who collapsed during a football match on 22 February.
Responding to allegations that UMNO Youth is boycotting the BN candidate, Ahmad Zahid firmly denied the claims and said he had full confidence in the party's youth wing.
“I don’t believe those rumours. I’m confident that UMNO Youth will give their full support to Mohamad Yusri,” he said.
The Election Commission (EC) has set polling day for 26 April, with early voting scheduled for 22 April. - April 12, 2025
